The business started at the beginning of the 1900s, set up by great-grandfather Ernesto Olearo and his wife, Clementina Razzano, who built the first small cellar in the Casarello area, in the comune of Alfiano Natta, with a vineyard of a few hectares where they started growing vines.
In the 1940s, it was the turn of the son, Giuseppe Eugenio, nicknamed Genio, a man with great insight and far-reaching ideas. He courageously increased production and business first by buying grapes, and then by slowly producing them from his own vineyards, following the purchase of various vine-growing and wine-producing properties, including that of the Castello di Razzano in 1968, which belonged to the Caligaris family, who were quite important in Italian life and politics.
Valentino Caligaris, a lawyer, inherited the castle and its estate from his uncle, General Eugenio Caligaris, who was the first State Attorney General of the nascent Republic in 1946 after the Second World War; his son, General Luigi Caligaris, is an important military strategy expert and is well-known internationally.
During the 1980s, Augusto Olearo entered the business, after attending the School of Oenology in Alba. He began a period of great transformation and innovation by bringing new technology to the cellar, which would allow the company to introduce new products of increasingly better quality and integrity into new markets.
Is 2006 when the sons, Federico, an oenologist trained by the same school as his father, and Riccardo, a business school graduate, entered the company, a vast programme to restructure the castle was begun. The Castle also became an exclusive tourist destination for international clients, who are intrigued by this charming location in the Monferrato region and by the wines produced in the castle, giving life to the present Relais di Charme.
